FRAGICAP
Research Group for the prevention, diagnosis and management of fragility and functional decline, both physical and cognitive in the elderly
Aging is a broad research area that encompasses all social and health aspects affecting the elderly, i.e., their overall health, diseases of the different physiological systems, use of health services, quality of life, etc. Aging research overlaps with other research areas, namely, cardiovascular, diabetes, mental health, cancer, lifestyles and health services. However, some aspects such as the study of frailty in the elderly, cognitive impairment, multimorbidity, polypharmacy, home care and end-of-life care are very specific of this age group. Research in aging takes place within the framework of our aging society and its repercussions on the health and social systems, with emerging or increased incidence of new syndromes, the shift in family and care models and the new services on offer. The group includes GPs, primary care nurses, epidemiologists and health technicians. Four members of the team are PhDs and a fifth one read his dissertation in December. The aim of the group is to continue the study of frailty and cognitive decline and to carry out more PhD thesis in this area. Fragicap has the support of the Aging Area of the IDIAP, and it currently collaborates with other research groups such as those of care in health, lifestyles, the Rediapp, the University College Cork, the Universidade do Porto and the EIP on AHA (European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Aging).
