Osteoporosis and Musculoskeletal Diseases in Primary Care Research Group
The GROIMAP research group is integrated into the Research Support Unit of the Metropolitan North of the IDIAP Jordi Gol. The research group has been recognized as an emergent research group by the IDIAP Jordi Gol and as a pre-consolidated group by the AGAUR of the Generalitat de Catalunya. This is a multidisciplinary research group formed by doctors of different medicine specialties (Family Medicine, Rheumatology, Nuclear Medicine, Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy), and by Physiotherapists and Nurses. The purpose of the group is the clinical and epidemiological investigation of the prevalent diseases of the locomotor system in primary care and its determinants. With special interest in two aspects: the epidemiology of osteoporotic fractures, also called fragility fractures, and its primary and secondary prevention. In the prevention chapter, the research group has stood out in the determination of the absolute risk (individual) of fragility fracture in the next 10 years and in the development of useful tools for primary care level to detect the population with greater risk for new fractures to apply preventive measures, both pharmacological and others factors as prevention of falls. Since its creation, the group has published numerous works in scientific journals indexed and with an impact factor. Its members have obtained funding in several competitive research calls. The group is coordinated by Dr. Rafael Azagra Ledesma who is a specialist in Family Medicine and in Clinical Pharmacology. He works as a Medical Doctor at the Badia del Valles Center and his teaching as a Senior Professor of Family Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. From the academic point of view, the group has completed 10 doctoral theses with the highest qualification of excellence and one of them has obtained the Extraordinary Doctorate Award from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Dr. Marta Zwart Salmerón). Two of the main current projects are: the "PRECIOSA" project, with funding from the Carlos III Health Institute (FIS scholarship), is focused on the prevention of falls in people over 75 years old living in the community. The fieldwork is developed in the Nord Metropolitan Management of the Institut Català de la Salut. The second project "EPIFROS", with funding from the AGAUR of the Generalitat de Catalunya, is focused on the determination of fracture risk factors and on the epidemiology of fragility fracture.
